Russia Strikes Ukraine’s North on Wednesday, West Discuss Military Support

  • Russia struck civilian infrastructure in Ukraine's northern city of Kharkiv on Wednesday, while Western defense officials discussed Kyiv's military needs ahead of its expected offensive to retake territory seized by Moscow, The Wall Street Journal report. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hosted the virtual talks from the Pentagon where key supporters of Ukraine from 50 nations convened on Wednesday. Austin said Contact Group countries understood Ukraine's urgent need for more military support.
  • Russia cut investments into US Treasuries in January from $629m to $67m, Kommersant report.
  • President Putin will hold a videoconference with the government today and take part in the annual congress of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP), where he will meet top officials of the business group. Weekly gold and forex reserve data is on the docket today.
  • The Russian central bank is expected to keep the key policy rate unchanged at 7.50% at tomorrow’s meeting. Inflation risks do not yet justify a rate hike, while the pace of disinflation and poor activity data does not warrant restarting the easing cycle.
