Japan Dec Ind. Output Slowed; -1.6% M/M

  • Japan's industrial production fell 1.6% m/m in December, after falling 0.5% m/m last month, led by the decrease in the general machinery industry, the automobile industry, and the electrical information communication machine industry,. Although it was the second monthly fall, output increased on a quarterly basis.
  • Shipments fell 1.6% m/m in December due to weakening demands from overseas, quicker than the previous 0.9% m/m decline.
  • Inventories rose for the first time in nine months by 1.1% m/m, wiping off the 1.1% m/m drop in November.
  • METI sees production rising 8.9% (revised up from 7.1%) in January before falling 0.3% in February.
  • METI kept its assessment on the factory output as "recovering," based on a boost production plan in January but also warned of the increasing risk of a global economic turndown.
