GERMANY
GERMANY: Social Democratic Party (SPD) have confirmed Norbert Walter-Borjans and
Saskia Esken as party leaders at annual party conference. Was largely expected
following the co-leaders win in the members vote that was announced last
Saturday.
- Initially viewed as a threat to the continuation of the governing federal
coalition under Chancellor Angela Merkel, the new SPD leaders have shied away
from dissolving the gov't, instead advocating changes to the coalition
agreement.
- In conference speech, co-leaders launch attack on Merkel's centre-right
Christian Democratic Union, saying CDU Sec. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has
"militarised" foreign policy.
- Congress motion to decide on whether to continue in coalition later today.
Unlikely to call for breakup of gov't.
