Ardern Announces Small Cabinet Rejig, Vows Comprehensive Review In 2023

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the planned Cabinet reshuffle during her post-Cabinet press conference:

  • Trevor Mallard will step down as Speaker in mid-August and Labour will nominate Adrian Rurawhe to replace him.
  • Kris Faafoi will also leave parliament for personal reasons, he wanted to go for some time. Kiri Allan will take over as Justice Minister.
  • Poto Williams moves out of the Police portfolio, as had been touted by local media outlets. Chris Hipkins will take over as Police Minister.
  • There were some other minor changes and Ardern said that the shake-up was triggered by the imminent departure of Mallard and Faafoi.
  • The Premier pledged to conduct a "more comprehensive" review at the start of 2023.
