Asian Crude Imports Remained Robust March on China's Revival

Asian crude imports were robust in March at 117mn tonnes or 27.60mn bpd, but dipped 6% from Februarys pace of 29.4mn bpd according to Refinitiv.

  • The first three months of 2023 were stronger than every month in 2022, except for November when Asia's crude imports were 29.10 million bpd.
  • Asia's oil imports in Q1 saw arrivals of 28.67 mn bpd, up 6.3% from the 26.96 mn bpd in Q4 of 2022.
  • China's March imports were assessed at 49.26 mn tonnes or 11.65 mn bpd, which is almost 1 mn bpd above February's 10.66 mn bpd.
  • Saudi Arabia reclaimed its place as China's top supplier in March at 8.08 mn tonnes, or a share of 16.4%, edging out Russia at 7.95 mn tonnes, or a share of 16.1%.
  • India's crude imports rose to an 11-month high of 21.23 mn tonnes in March, or about 5.02 million bpd, in March, with Russia supplying 34% of the total, or 7.29 million tonnes.
