August Retail Sales +0.6%; Ex-MV +0.7%

  • U.S. retail sales rose 0.6% in August, far below expectations for a 1.0% gain, according to figures released Wednesday by the Census Bureau. July's gain was revised down to 0.9% (prev +1.2%).
  • Vehicle sales were up 0.2% in August following a 1.0% decline in July. Gas station sales rose 0.4%, slowing from July's 4.4% gain.
  • Excluding motor vehicle sales, retail sales were up 0.7% in August. Excluding motor vehicle and gas station sales, retail sales also rose 0.7%.
  • Sales at food services and drinking places rose 4.7%, up from 4.1% in July. Meanwhile, grocery store sales plummeted, falling by 1.6% after rising 0.7% in July. Food and beverage store sales fell 1.2%.
  • Clothing and clothing accessory store sales were up 2.9% in August after a 2.2% increase in July.
  • Building material and garden equipment store sales rose 2.0% in August. Furniture store sales rose 2.1%.
