POWER: Baltic TSOs to Procure 1.5GW of Balancing Capacity This Year

POWER

The Baltic TSOs have procured a total of 1.257GW of balancing capacity through the first auction of the newly launched Baltic Frequency Reserves Capacity Market, with capacity expected to reach 1.5GW this year, Elering said.

  • This includes 29MW of Frequency Control Reserve (FCR) and 1.228GW of Manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) to ensure stability ahead of the Baltic states' synchronisation with the Continental European grid.
  • This number is expected to rise by the end of the year amid increased renewable production.
  • Additionally, on 8 February 2025, the Baltic TSOs will conduct an isolated islanding test by disconnecting from the post-soviet Brell network, followed by full synchronisation with the European grid on 9 February.
