POWER: Baltics Power Plant Capacity Climbs to 13GW in 2024 Due to Wind, Solar
POWER
The Baltics increased its power plant capacity by 35% on the year in 2024 to 13GW, the highest in 15 years, due to the addition of new solar and wind projects, according to Latvian TSO AST.
- There was a total of 3.5GW of new wind and solar power plants installed in the Baltic region, with the total capacity climbing to 6GW.
- This led to the amount of electricity produced climbing to 18.6TWh – the highest in the last six years.
- Local generation covered 68% of Baltic electricity consumption, a significant increase from 58% in the 2019-2023 period.
- Power imports into the Baltic States dropped by 15%, totalling 11.004TWh. The biggest decline was in imports from Finland, which fell by 41.9% due to unplanned outages of the 650MW Estlink 2 connection.
- But this was offset by an increase in the volume of electricity imported from Poland at 62.6% higher on the year, with Swedish volumes inching up 6.3% above volumes in 2023.
