Bloomberg, Reuters and WSJ Not Invited to Cover Upcoming OPEC Meeting in Unusual Move

OIL

OPEC has not invited Reuters, Bloomberg or the WSJ to report on ministerial meetings in Vienna this weekend according to reports from each outlet.

  • Reuters has said it has not received a reason for why it is not invited.
  • The Financial Times reported in a story on Wednesday that it had received an invite. Argus, Platts and CNBC are also understood to have invites.
  • The media ban is an unusual move for OPEC.
  • The FT reported that “people familiar with the decision said it had been instigated by Saudi Arabia’s energy minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman”
  • The news organisations excluded from the event are still expected to send reporters to Vienna, even if they cannot access the Opec secretariat.
