Boric To Chair Crisis Committee Amid Heavy Rainfall, New Codelco CEO

  • President Gabriel Boric will head a crisis committee to address the severe weather conditions that are hitting the central part of the country. Reports suggest transport disruptions are likely in the region due to the adverse weather, especially in mountainous areas due to icy roads and reduced visibility caused by blowing snow.
    • Chile's National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED) has reported more than 16,000 people across parts of Biobio, Maule, Nuble, and O'Higgins region have been evacuated due to storms and associated threat of flooding. Hundreds of homes have been damaged and nearly 800 people have been isolated due to impassable roads.
  • The former head of Santiago’s subway will take over as chief executive officer of Codelco. Ruben Alvarado will replace Andre Sougarret next month, the company said in a regulatory filing late Friday, becoming the third CEO in a year.
    • Alvarado takes over with Codelco’s production at the lowest in a quarter century as delays in projects to overhaul aging mines exacerbate the impact of deteriorating ore grades. (BBG)
