CAD Underperforms Despite USD Strength, WTI Gains

CANADA
  • USDCAD has pushed to a new session high of 1.3628, through yesterday’s range but holding below Friday’s 1.3640 that had seen another step towards a key resistance at 1.3655 (May 26 high).
  • Unusually considering the backdrop of USD strength and WTI maintaining earlier gains, CAD sits towards bottom of the G10 FX pack. GoCs trade broadly in line with Tsys although bank earnings skewed weaker on an adjusted EPS basis with BMO’s results this morning.
  • Latest CFTC data up to Aug 22 showed a stabilization in CAD net shorts at -7.3% OI having slid to -7.2% the prior week, still the largest net shorts since June.
  • No local data of note today with a potential driver in US JOLTS and consumer confidence ahead.
