CBA note that their “internal credit & debit card spending data for the fortnight to 20 May 2022 points to continued strength in the household sector. As we have been noting recently, some of this strength will be reflecting increased prices as inflation picks up. Even with the impact of inflation, it is clear the household sector continues to spend, including on discretionary sectors. Spending on services has transitioned from recovery to expansion as consumers normalise their spending habits. National spending growth did ease slightly in the past fortnight but we will need further evidence before we can be confident that households are starting to tighten their budgets.”
