US DATA
  • Challenger Job cut announcements rose 176% Y/Y in April, the smallest Y/Y increase since Dec after an average 390% jump in Q1.
  • The drop from 89.7k to 67.0k came predominantly from tech firms, where layoff announcements fell from 39.2k to 11.6k for the lowest (non-seasonally adjusted) month since Oct but still up massively compared to just 192 in Apr’22.
  • Non-tech layoff announcements rose on the month from 50.5k to 55.4k, with the Y/Y falling to 130% Y/Y from 137% in March and 211% averaged in Q1.
  • The recent revision to initial claims seasonal adjustment shows that the prior uplift in layoff announcements fed through in Feb/Mar but hasn’t materially pushed on higher since then.
