Chicago Survey Finds Firms Looking to Slow Hiring

US DATA
MNI (London)

Chicago Business BarometerTM asked firms in January "With employment costs increasing and growth outlooks weakening, are you considering slowing hiring in upcoming months?"

  • An equal number of respondents (36.1% each) responded “Yes” and “No”. 11.1% were expecting to somewhat slow hiring, whilst 16.7% remained unsure. Some respondents continue to struggle with acute labor shortages whilst others have begun laying off staff as weak business conditions prevail.
  • The Employment subindex ticked down by -0.6 points to a four-month low of 42.0 in January as one-quarter of firms reported lower employment levels.
  • Labor shortages continue to hamper business activity and were reported by some firms as making up the greatest bottleneck to production.
  • The US Bureau of Labor Statistics manufacturing nonfarm payroll growth has cooled recently. After a jump to +34k jobs in October 2022, November and December both recorded a more modest +8k. The Chicago SurveyTM implies a continuation of this trend.
