NSC Kirby: Time To Make Sure US-Saudi Relat'ship In Nat Interest

WHITE HOUSE

White House Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council John Kirby has confirmed that the White House will evaluate the US-Saudi relations but says the White House won't be announcing a formal policy review.

  • Kirby: "[President] Biden believes it is time to make sure the US-Saudi relationship is serving US national interest."
  • Kirby: "The oil output cut was a decision made by OPEC+ but clearly Saudi Arabia is the leader of the organisation [...] We thought it was a short sighted decision and that it benefited Russia."
  • On the statement from Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) calling for the US to "freeze cooperation" with Saudi Arabia, Kirby said: "I'm not aware of any heads up that we received before Sen. Menendez came out with that call. I can only tell you that the president believes it’s time to take another look at this relationship."
