Congress Report Recommends President Castillo Should Face Trial

  • A Peruvian congressional committee report recommends President Pedro Castillo face a political trial for violating the constitution, along with a five-year ban from holding public office, according to a document published across local media. (Bloomberg)
    • Constitutional accusations committee still has to vote to approve the report for the process to continue in congress.
  • Later on Tuesday, Castillo said in a televised message that there is “a plot between a sector in congress, nation’s prosecutor office and some media to destabilize democracy.”
  • Separately, newly appointed Finance Minister Kurt Burneo met central bank chief Julio Velarde to discuss macroeconomic stability, according to a Finance Ministry statement.
    • Burneo expressed the need to improve coordination between the two institutions amid current challenges the country faces due to external effects.
