FED: Could be interesting to see if Chicago's Evans and Atlanta's Bostic comment
on negative rates in their appearances today, as an indication whether everyone
on the FOMC is singing from the same hymn sheet ahead of Powell's speech Weds.
- Evans (1230ET) - long considered a Fed dove - has previously entertained the
possibility of the Fed going negative. He said as recently as November that
other global central banks have found -ve rates to be "helpful for them", and
their experience meant "you could imagine trying that" in the U.S. Specifically
for the Fed, "maybe you could get seventy basis points" negative. Though he was
clearly skeptical about whether that would be effective enough vs other policy
alternatives ("don't think that we can achieve enough with that tool").
- And on March 1, Bostic (1200ET) said he would not want to rule out any central
bank tool, including negative rates - last week he referred to the Fed deploying
its "full arsenal" if necessary.
