Court Rules Golden Dawn Party Guilty Of Running Criminal Organisation

GREECE

A court in Greece has found party leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos and eight members of the far-right ultranationalist Golden Dawn party guilty of operating as a criminal organisation.

  • The organisation was also found guilty of being accessories to the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas (known as Killer-P) in 2013.
  • Golden Dawn grew as a political movement in the 2010's amidst Greece's economic collapse and found its support growing as the Mediterranean migrant crisis intensified in 2014 and 2015.
  • In September 2015 the party came third in elections for the Hellenic Parliament, a high water mark of its support. In the 2019 election Golden Dawn failed to cross the threshold for parliamentary representation.
