CZECHIA: South Korea's KHNP Wins Czech Nuclear Tender

CZECHIA
  • Czechia chose South Korea's KHNP over Electricity de France for its nuclear energy procurement project, which could be the biggest such investment in the country's history. Prime Minister Petr Fiala said that talks will now start with KHNP on the construction of two additional reactors at the Dukovany plant, with a potential for another two at the facility in Temelin. Fiala estimated that each of the two first units would cost around CZK200bn. Separately, Westinghouse threatened to mount a legal challenge to Czechia's earlier decision to exclude it from the bidding process, with the company failing to meet formal requirements. The company said that it "reaffirms its position that KHNP is not authorised to use Westinghouse reactor technology, which is the basis of KHNP offer and references for the Czech nuclear tender, without Westinghouse's agreement."
  • CNB Deputy Governor Eva Zamrazilova reiterated that the key question for the coming months is the pace of easing in Czechia, noting that the central bank will be "very cautious and focus on not underestimating [risks]."
  • Denik N reported that cabinet ministers have informally agreed to nominate Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Sikela for the position of a European Commissioner, but if he is offered a relatively unimportant portfolio, he could turn it down.
