CZECHIA: Upcoming MonPol Decision Overshadowed By US Election

CZECHIA
  • The main opposition ANO party announced that its deputy chairman and Karel Havlicek will lead the party's campaign in the 2025 parliamentary election in both Prague and Central Bohemia, despite only running from the Prague list. Seznam Zpravy reported that the decision to put Havlicek at the top of the prestigious electoral list in the capital was made after he played an instrumental role in securing ANO's victory in the recent regional election in Central Bohemia, where ANO beat both STAN and SPOLU. The main opposition party is hoping to improve its results in Prague, where it has previously achieved significantly worse electoral outcomes than in the whole country (17.5% versus 27.1% in the most recent parliamentary election).
  • DenikN polled a sample of MPs about their preferences in the US election, finding that lawmakers from the opposition ANO and SPD parties as well as from PM Fiala's ODS tended to prefer Donald Trump, while other parties from the governing coalition were leaning towards Kamala Harris. ODS parliamentary caucus chair Marek Benda said he would "probably vote for Donald Trump" but framed this choice as choosing "the lesser evil."
  • Four regional assemblies elected governors yesterday. KDU-CSL's Jan Grolich returns as South Moravia Governor, while ANO's Petr Koleta, Martin Kukla and Radim Holis became Governors of Hradec Kralove, Vysocina and Zlin respectively.
  • As a reminder, the Czech National Bank (CNB) will release its monetary policy decision on Thursday alongside an updated macroeconomic forecast.
