Delays to India's Plans to Increase LNG Import Capacity

Several of India’s proposed liquefied natural gas import projects are struggling with delays as India attempts to increase natural gas usage.

  • Two new floating import terminals are not expected to start before 2025 having missed commissioning targets last year as surging LNG prices reduced demand and disrupted import plans according to S&P Global.
  • A new terminal on the east coast is expected to commission in Q2 2023 but may run below capacity due to lack of overseas supplies.
  • New Delhi is trying to increase LNG import capacity to reduce consumption of dirtier fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. They aim to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix from 6% to 15% by 2030.
