DSME to Deliver LNG Carriers as Qatar plan to Boost Production

LNG

South Korean shipyard DSME has a 1.07 trillion-won (US$850 million) order to build four LNG carriers under a deal with a Qatari state oil firm.

  • DSME are to build the 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers and deliver them by the first half of 2025.
  • The contract is in line with Qatar's plan to boost its LNG production capacity to 126m tons by 2027 from the current 77m tons.
  • The increased production is to come from their North Field expansion project with four new LNG trains in North Field East due on line by the end of 2025. The two expansion phases, North Field East and North Field South, are expected to cost up to $50 billion according to some analysts.
  • Qatar currently has a nameplate liquefaction capacity of 77mtpa, behind Australia’s nearly 88mtpa.
