Energy Blueprint Falls Short in Coming Three Months

  • Daily Maverick today writes that Ramaphosa’s plans for the energy sector is set to add less than 2,000MW over the next three months, which will not be sufficient to make a dent in or alleviate power cuts from Eskom. At its worst, the plan leaves Eskom with a shortage of up to 6,000MW due to the susceptibility of power stations to breakdowns and maintenance.
  • Elsewhere, BusinessDay cites the finance minister as noting that Eskom are able to ask for more funds from government for maintenance and for fixing power stations. The piece adds that Eskom themselves have not yet approached the Treasury with any requests.
  • Auto sector workers are threatening a shutdown in the coming weeks as Numsa workers demand a 20% wage increase on top of other protections, while the counter-offer sees wage increases linked to CPI on a three-year basis.
