Energy Crisis Dominates Congress Discussions

  • Brazil will not institute energy rationing as a drought threatens to disrupt hydroelectric power plants, the leader of Brazil's lower house of Congress said on Tuesday, reversing his earlier remark that rationing would be necessary. (NP)
    • Lower house Speaker Arthur Lira said on Twitter that he had spoken with the Mines and Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque, who clarified that the government is not considering any energy rationing.
    • "A voluntary incentive for consumers to efficiently use energy will be enacted," Lira said.
  • Brazil's state-run oil company Petrobras is working with the national electricity regulator Aneel on ways to help relieve a looming energy crisis, as a drought in the country threatens imminent disruptions at hydroelectric power plants.
    • Petrobras Chief Executive Joaquim Silva e Luna and Aneel chief Andre Pepitone told Reuters they had met in Brasilia on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of the oil firm increasing the supply of natural gas to help boost the power generated by thermoelectric plants. (National post)
