Energy Expert Eyes Boiler Tube Fix as Key Short-Term Solution for Eskom

  • Energy expert Chris Yelland says proper maintenance of ageing plants at Eskom with a target on avoiding the failure of boiler tubes is the key to ensuring energy stability in the near-term. These failures are the most common and contribute to 2 stages of load-shedding (2% of total generation) every time they fail.
    • Sasol recently proposed a solution that has proven effective in its plants, using a smart maintenance platform.
    • Yelland says this, combined with better long-term maintenance would make a vast improvement, but pointed to the just transition to renewables as the overall long-term solution to Eskom’s woes
