Eskom Reduces Loadshedding

  • South Africa's Presidency said that it is working with Eskom to assess what funding is needed to expand its transmission network to be able to add more solar and wind power to the grid. The difficulties in increasing Eskom's debt burden has been delaying the implementation of South Africa's $9.3bn climate pact with Western nations.
  • Meanwhile, Eskom reduced loadshedding to Stage 2, after alternating between Stages 2 and 3 daily, and will implement power cuts of that intensity until further notice.
  • The Fiscal and Finance Commission (the Treasury's watchdog) said that tapping gold and FX reserves will put South Africa in a "weaker strategic position."
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa tapped Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya to take the helm of the judiciary from September.
