Estonian PM Resigns Over Launch Of Corruption Probe

CEE

Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas has resigned after the Office of the Prosecutor General lodged an official suspicion of corruption report. Ratas' Centre Party, popular with Estonia's Russian-speaking minority, as well as five other individuals are under investigation regarding a property development in Tallinn.

  • Ratas said his resignation was intended to allow for him to 'take political responsibility' and 'clarify the allegations'.
  • The prosecutor general has said that Ratas himself is not under investigation and there is no reason to think he had knowledge of the incident.
  • The gov't is currently a somewhat unwieldy coalition between Ratas' Centre Party, the centre-right Fatherland Party and the right-wing nationalist Conservative People's Party. No election is due to be called until March 2023 but the president is now in a position where he has to put forward a candidate for PM to the Riigikogu (parliament). If no candidate that is acceptable to all three parties can be found it could lead to the withdrawal of one or more parties.
