EU Gas Withdrawals Below Normal Before Cold Next Week

European natural gas storage is showing small net withdrawals after the net injections seen over last weekend according to GIE data. Warm weather in Europe this week allowed withdrawals to remain below normal but supplies could be pressured next week with the forecast of below normal temperatures in the last week of March.

  • European gas in storage is at 55.60% according to GIE data from 21 Mar compared to the five year average of 34.5%.
  • Net withdrawals were 492.5GWh/d on 21 March compared to the five year average net withdrawal rate for this time of year of approximately 1,750GWh/d.
  • The countries with the largest gas in store volumes are Germany at 159.60TWh (63.89% full), Italy at 110.01TWh (56.87%), Netherlands at 81.42TWh (58.6%), Austria at 63.72TWh (65.86%) and France at 38.01TWh (28.45%).
