Fin/Swe/Tur Talks "Constructive" But Madrid Summit "Deadline" Unlikely

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has described trilateral talks at NATO HQ in Brussels today between representatives of Sweden, Finland, and Turkey as "constructive."

  • Stoltenberg: “I welcome the constructive meeting held today on the historic applications by Finland and Sweden to join NATO.”
  • NATO Press Secretary Oana Lungescu: "At the invitation of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, senior officials from Türkiye, Finland & Sweden met with senior NATO officials. They focused on security concerns raised by our Ally Türkiye in order to make progress on the membership process for Finland & Sweden."
  • Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin: "Discussions between Turkey, Finland and Sweden about the Nordic countries' NATO membership will continue but an alliance summit in Madrid next week is not a deadline."
  • Yusuf Erim of Middle East Eye writes of Turkish demands: "New NATO law against terrorism to be enacted in July. NATO legislation must be implemented by new members. Turkiye expects Sweden to take concrete steps to stop terror propaganda. Talks with Finland, Sweden to continue."
