FinMin Calls for MTBPS Delay to 11 Nov, Voters Press Ramaphosa on Eskom

  • FinMin Godongwana says SA's Medium Term Budget may be delayed by a week to 11 Nov. The Treasury will ask parliament to delay the unveiling of the medium-term budget policy statement by a week to give officials more time to prepare after the country's local government elections on Nov. 1.
    • Local economist says the statement could show a R160bn revenue overshoot
  • Ramaphosa called on voters not to abandon the ANC because of electricity problems after he was confronted with an angry crowd in Gauteng threatening to boycott elections if there was no electricity by 1 Nov.
    • He noted that only the ANC could solve the electricity problems.
  • Eskom says it will extend stage 2 load-shedding from 0900 on Tuesday to 0500 on Saturday. Notes Kusile, Matimba & Arnot stations have returned to operations, but Koeberg will only return by the weekend.
    • Notes that delays in returning 5 other units to service has hampered its ability to replenish emergency reserves with breakdowns at 13,333mw while planned maintenance is at 5,548mw
  • Tshwane city warns residents of service disruptions amid wage strikes by union SAMWU who embarked on a strike last week.
    • Property was damaged in yesterday's action and the situation is being monitored closely for escalation but no major risks are noted at this stage
