Foreign Ministers Fail To Agree On Belarus Sanctions As Cyprus Holds Out

The High Representative for the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell due to speak in the coming minutes following the conclusion of the meeting of the foreign affairs council, the meeting of all member states' foreign ministers.

  • It has been confirmed that foreign ministers were unable to come to an agreement on sanctions against the Belarusian gov't of President Alexander Lukashenko.
  • Cyprus was the holdout, with its FM stating that as there was not unanimous EU support for action against Turkey in the ongoing dispute involving Cyprus, Greece and Turkey in the East Med, it would not allow the required unanimity to be reached on Belarus sanctions.
  • The topic of sanctions on Belarus (as well as in the East Med) will now go to the special European Council summit starting on Thursday in Brussels.
