France May Face Power Supply Interruptions During Cold Snap This Winter: EdF

ELECTRICITY

France could face power supply interruptions this winter in case of a severe cold spell, however, overall supply is secured amid lower demand and increased nuclear availability, EdF said in a document to its employees.

  • “The power system remains at risk in the event of an intense cold snap, particularly at the beginning of winter,” the document said.
  • Failures could start if grid temperatures were to drop 7C below normal levels during November and October, leading to possible load shedding, voltage reductions and supply interruptions, it said.
  • EdF confirmed nuclear availability targets of 40GW in November, 45GW in December and 50GW in January. This is well above last year’s levels when availability averaged 31.0GW in November and 39.2GW in December, Montel data showed.
  • EdF forecasts power demand to remain 7% below 2017-2019 levels during this winter. Weather-adjusted demand was 9% below the 2014-2019 average last winter, RTE data showed.
  • Overall, the grid faces lower risk this winter compared to last, and a limited risk for failures, EdF wrote.
