POWER: German Day Ahead Clears Higher On Week Amid Lower Wind

German and French day-ahead prices fell due to typically lower weekend demand. However, prices in Germany were higher week-on-week, driven by reduced wind generation on 8 February compared to the previous week. In France, prices remained lower supported by increased nuclear availability.
- The German day-ahead spot settled at €133.66/MWh from €179.14/MWh on the previous day.
- This compares to the German day-ahead spot at €108.81/MWh for 8 February delivery (last Saturday).
- The French day-ahead spot cleared at €121.08/MWh from €147.95/MWh on the previous day.
- This compares to the French day-ahead spot at €123.32/MWh for 8 February delivery.
- Germany was at a €12.58/MWh premium from a €31.19/MWh premium in the previous session.
- Wind output in Germany is forecast to decrease to 1.34GW during base load on Saturday, before rising to 8.6GW during base load on Sunday, compared with 4.64GW on Friday according to SpotRenewables.
- Wind output in Germany will then be at 4.40GW, or 7% load factor on 17 February (Mon) – which could see prices rising sharply from the weekend and on the week.
- Power demand in Germany is forecast to fall to 54.38GW on Saturday and to 51.49GW on Sunday, compared with 62.43GW on Friday amid mean temperatures in Dusseldorf forecasts to edge higher to 1C on Saturday before edging lower on Sunday at 0.9C, with temperatures below the seasonal normal, according to Bloomberg.
- Power demand will then be at 61.29GW on 17 February.
- Wind output in France is forecast to fall to 4.19GW during base load on Saturday, before falling further to 2.93GW during base load on Sunday, compared with 4.85GW on Friday according to SpotRenewables.
- Wind will then be at an 11% load factor, or 2.55GW on 17 February – which could place prices at a discount to the latter.
- Power demand in France is forecast to fall to 63.96GW on Saturday and to 61.98GW on Sunday, down from 66.27GW on Friday amid mean temperatures in Paris are forecast to fall to 1C on Saturday, before rising to 2.3C on Sunday, compared with 1.6C on Friday – below the seasonal normal, according to Bloomberg.
- Power demand will then be at 67.61GW on 17 February.
- Nuclear availability in France rose to 86% of capacity as of Friday morning, up from 84% on Thursday, RTE data showed, cited by Reuters.
