German Gas Price Brake to Cost 54 Billion Euros

The planned brake on German gas prices will cost an estimated 54 billion euros through to April 2024 – 21 billion euros of which will be for industry according to an economy ministry document.

  • The measures will be covered by a 200 billion euro energy crisis response fund announced earlier this year.
  • The price per kWh has been set at 12 euro cents for 80% of household consumers' estimated annual consumption, it says. The price for industry consumers is set at 7 cents per kWh for 70% of consumption.
  • German industry will benefit from the price brake from January while households will have to wait until March. The government has been working on trying to bring the household date in line with industry.
