German Gas Savings Fall Short of Target

NATURAL GAS

German gas users, both households and businesses, saved too little gas in the second half of January according to the network regulator.

  • Gas consumers only saved 8.6% in the last week of January compared to the average use between 2018 and 2021, and 14% when taking colder temperatures into account.
  • The regulator has said consumption needs to be cut by 20% to help offset the lack of supplies from Russia.
  • German gas storage of 78% is well above the target of 40% by Feb 1 but the regulator wants to keep stocks as high as possible to prepare for next winter where they may not benefit from such warm temperatures.
