German Government Plans To Go Ahead With Ruegen LNG Terminal

The German government has proposed updated legislation to speed up permits for a LNG terminal at the island of Ruegen in the Baltic Sea, while clarifying it gives up plans for LNG terminals in Hamburg and Rostock according to a document seen by Bloomberg.

  • The German government is hoping to progress with the Mukran site LNG project. A document seen by Reuters states: “The site has not identified “any fundamental technical or (licensing) legal obstacles.”
  • Two planned LNG terminals at the site will be operated by Deutsche ReGas, if approved. Talks for the construction of a pipeline connecting the Mukran site with Lubmin, mainland Germany, are also still ongoing.
  • The planned import capacity of the terminal is 15bcm by 2024, with at least 10bcm need to guarantee security of supply according to the Economy Ministry.
  • The proposal also clarifies that the government is giving up plans for LNG terminals in Hamburg and Rostock.
