ELECTRICITY: German Grid Expansion Picks Up Pace, Grid Costs Remain Too High

ELECTRICITY

The pace of Germany’s power grid expansion has increased in recent years, however, grid costs remain too high, Bnetza president Klaus Mueller said, cited by Reuters.

  • "I see far more speed in construction and approvals," Mueller said.
  • Approvals for new lines, counted in kilometres, rose 13-fold between 2021 and 2024. Construction starts on new lines rose fourfold during the same period, he added.
  • "But power grid costs are too high, we will have to turn several screws to change that," he said.
  • Bnetza is currently overseeing the construction of 9,600km of new grids in Germany.
  • Of the total, 2,700km are about to start construction and 5,500km are just before planning procedures
