GERMANY: Habeck To Meet w/Pres As Berlin Election Official Warns Of Early Vote

GERMANY

Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck is set to meet with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier today in order to discuss 'an orderly path' to new elections according to unnamed gov't officials. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's apparent openness to accelerating the process towards snap elections has garnered notable attention in recent days.

  • Speaking in a TV interview on 10 Nov, Scholz said that he would sign off on a confidence vote before Christmas if the Bundestag leader of his centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) Rolf Mützenich agrees with centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Freidrich Merz. Scholz's initial plan had a January confidence vote leading to a March election.
  • The potential governing combination post-election remains up in the air. On 10 Nov, leader of the pro-business liberal Free Democrats (FDP) Christian Lindner warned Merz of forming a gov't with the SPD or Habeck's environmentalist Greens. However, according to polls the CDU and FDP will fall far short of a majority, requiring at least a third party should the two look to form a coalition.
  • Today (11 Nov) state election officials will meet to discuss early election preparations amid warnings with Federal Election Commissioner Ruth Brand warning Scholz of "incalculable risks" posed by shorter election deadlines, while Berlin Election Commissioner Stephan Bröchler said Scholz should "not to rush into setting the election date,". In recent elections Berlin has been notorious in its poor organisational capacity when it comes to state and federal elections, requiring a partial re-run of the 2021 federal election.
