NATURAL GAS

Germany will continue to face a risk of severe gas shortages until the 2026/2027 winter period unless it adds more natural gas infrastructure to avoid potential strains from cold weather according to gas storage operator INES.

  • Germany would need additional LNG terminals, storage capacity or pipeline connections to ensure sufficient supply sooner, INES said.
  • “The danger of gas shortages during cold temperatures remains and will continue to accompany us until winter of 2026/2027 unless further infrastructure measures are taken,” said INES’s head Sebastian Bleschke.
  • If very cold temperatures were to hit Germany during the upcoming winter, storages could already be depleted by the end of next January, INES said.
  • Germany is planning to install a total of six FSRUs this year. Three terminals are already operational.
