COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • Germany recorded an additional 4,010 new cases on October 7, the highest one-day total registered since April 9. The scale of the second-wave outbreak in Germany, as was the case with the first wave in the spring, remains far reduced compared to many of its surrounding countries and regional peers, with the number of new daily cases well below those of Spain, France, the UK, and the Netherlands. On October 8, German research minister Anja Karliczek stated she was confident a vaccine would be avaliable by mid-2021.
  • The average number of COVID-19 related fatalities in Russia over the past week stood at 161 per day on October 7. This is the highest seven-day average of coronavirus fatalities in the country since July 13. Russia's Sputnik V vaccine continues to make progress towards completion according to government, but there remains scepticism in the West towards the drug's efficacy and safety.
  • In contrast to Russia, the average number of COVID-19 related fatalities recorded in the United States across the last week hit a multi-month low on October 7. The 696 fatalities recorded per day over the last seven days, although one of the highest fatality figures in the world, is the lowest weekly average since July 10. The slowdown in the number of fatalities comes as the number of new cases plateaus around the 40-45k new cases per day mark.
