COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- The United Kingdom recorded 17,540 new cases on October 8, the country's highest one-day total that is not attributable to a data revision. The average number of COVID-19 related fatalities per day across the last week stands at 56, the highest seven-day average since July 1. The UK government is lining up a new set of localised restrictions early next week in an effort to suppress major case spikes in northern England.
- Australia has recorded two consecutive days with zero COVID-19 related deaths for the first time since July 13. This comes as the country's new caseload remains suppressed, with the seven-day average of new cases has remained below 20 new cases per day since Spetember 26. The city of Melbourne is due to have its lockdown restrictions reviewed on October 19. The 14-day rolling average is required to be fewer than five new cases per day for the restirctions to be eased. The city's total currently stands at 9.4.
- The United States recorded 56,191 new cases on October 8, the country's highest one-day total since the 64,601 cases were added to the total on August 14.
