Gov't Approval Falls Further As Johnson Down, Starmer Up In Favourability

UK

Latest opinion polling from YouGov shows the gov'ts disapproval rating rising to its highest level since 15 February 2021, when the UK was in the midst of a major wave of COVID-19 hospitalisations and fatalities and in a state of full lockdown. The rising number of COVID-19 infections, significant amount of anger from some sections of the population about the planned easing of social distancing restrictions in England from 19 July, and the resignation/sacking of former health secretary Matt Hancock for breaking COVID-19 regulations in having an affair with his aide, have dented public approval of the gov't as the 'vaccine bounce' in polls appears to be wearing off.

  • Do you approve or disapprove of the Government's record to date? %: Disapprove: 49% (+2), Approve: 32% (=). YouGov, Fieldwork: 5 July. Chgs w/ 28 June.
The same poll also shows a net decline in approval for Prime Minister Boris Johnson's actions in office, while leader of the main opposition centre-left Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, records the second consecutive improvement in his net score (although he still trails Johnson overall.
  • Do you think that Boris Johnson is doing well or badly as Prime Minister? Net figure of the percentage of people who said very/fairly well versus very/fairly badly: -14 (down 10)
  • Do you think Keir Starmer is doing well or badly as leader of the Labour party? Net figure of the percentage of people who said very/fairly well versus very/fairly badly: -38 (up six).
