ISRAEL: Hamas To Delay Release Of Next Batch Of Hostages-BBG

ISRAEL

Bloomberg reports that a spox for Hamas has said that the group will delay the next Saturday delivery of Israeli hostages, citing alleged violations by the IDF of the ceasefire in place in Gaza. Spox says "We will not release kidnapped persons until further notice".

  • The announcement comes as the Israeli delegation that travelled to Doha over the weekend for talks regarding the second phase of the ceasefire returned to Israel. Al Arabiya reports, "There were no immediate details on the reason for the return from the talks, which are intended to agree the basis for a second stage of a multi-phase ceasefire agreement and hostage-for-prisoner exchange reached last month. But a Palestinian official close to the discussions said progress was being held up by a lack of confidence between the two sides, which have accused each other of breaching the terms of the ceasefire."
  • Hamas' accusation of violations by Israel comes a day after Israeli forces completed a withdrawal from the Netzarim Corridor, a militarised zone separating north and south Gaza, a move stipulated in the first phase of the ceasefire deal.
  • A delay to the release of Israeli hostages risks the already-precarious ceasefire in place, and if the issue is not resolved could see a resumption in the conflict that risks a re-escalation in regional tensions.
