MNI BRIEF: French Inflation Highest Since 2018

(MNI) LONDON

French inflation soared to a near three-year high in August, with HICP jumping to an annual pace of 2.4% (above expectations of a rise to 2.2%) from 1.5% in July. That's that highest level since October of 2018, according to data released by Insee on Tuesday. HICP rose by 0.7% between July and August.

CPI increased by 0.6% in August, for a higher-than-expected 1.9% annual rise, the highest level since November of 2018. Energy prices provided the biggest boost to inflation, rising by a 12.7% over the same period of 2020, while fresh food prices increased by 6.3% and tobacco jumped by 5.1%. Manufactured goods increased by 1.3%, while services rose by just 0.7% annually.

Producer prices increased by 1.1% in July, matching the June increase, for an 8.0% annual rise, all of which could put upside pressure on headline eurozone inflation data later Tuesday.
