GERMANY: Important day in the German political calendar, with first-round voting
among members for the next leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) coming to
an end. 
- SPD sits as the junior partner to Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian
Democratic Union in the federal governing coalition.
- Many candidates running on joint tickets to be co-leaders of the party. Party
rules state at least one individual on co-leadership ticket must be a woman. 
- Split among candidates of whether to maintain the 'grand coalition' or GroKo
with Merkel's party. Highest-profile ticket of Finance Minister and Vice
Chancellor Olaf Scholz alongside east German Klara Geywitz want to maintain
current governing set-up.
- In event no single candidate/ticket wins a majority of votes, the top two
candidates/tickets will go to a second-round vote with the result expected at
end-November. 
- Winner will be confirmed at SPD conference from Dec 6-8. If new leader/leaders
pull SPD out of gov't, snap elections could be required.
