MIDEAST: -ISRAEL: In the aftermath of yesterday's High Court ruling (see 0914BST
bullet), President Rivlin has been presented with the signatures of a majority
of Knesset members indicating their support for caretaker PM Benjamin Netanyahu
to be invited to form a gov't.
- While the formation of a majority gov't will give Israeli politics some much
needed stability after a 'lost year', with 3 general elections in 13 months, the
governing arrangement between the two lends presents its own challenges. 
- With regards to policy, both men support the annexation of Israeli settlements
in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley. They will be keen to do this before
November, when US policy on annexations could change from support to opposition
should Biden defeat Trump. 
- While Gantz campaigned in elections on a platform of ousting Netanyahu, his
foreign policy position is similar to Netanyahu's. Gantz is former
Commander-in-Chief of the Israeli Defence Forces and is seen as a foreign policy
hawk similar to Netanyahu.
