Italy Confirms Move Towards Coal

Italy’s government announced gas saving measures yesterday evening after a persistent shortfall in gas flows for eight straight days from Russia has pressured the nation to take action.

  • Italy confirmed earlier reports that it plans to buy coal to use in coal fired stations to limit gas consumption for power generation.
  • The gas grid has been asked to undertake measures to bring storage levels to around their targeted level for June. "We need to go very fast," Ecological Transition Minister Roberto Cingolani said about filling the gas storage.
  • Cingolani said a proposed cap on natural gas prices was the only solution to rising costs. Italy has recommended that European Union member states put a limit on the price of gas imports from Russia. Imposing a price cap “seems to be the only sustainable solution,” Cingolani said.
