Japan Apr CPI -0.1% Y/Y; Energy Up

  • Japan's national average core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) declined 0.1% y/y in April, unchanged from the previous fall of 0.1% y/y.
  • Energy rose 0.7% y/y, compared with the previous 4.3% y/y drop. contributing 0.05 percentage points to CPI.
  • The underlying inflation rate measured by the core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) edged down 0.2% y/y, down from the previous 0.3% y/y increase.
  • Prices for ex-perishables stayed unchanged, the same as in March.
  • Prices for household spending rose 3.0% y/y, slower than the 4.4% y/y growth reported in March, and prices for accommodation increased 3.1% y/y.
