Japan Jun Retail Sales +5.9% Y/Y; 16th Monthly Rise

  • Japanese retail sales rose 5.9% y/y in June, following the 5.8% y/y growth reported last month, marking the 16th monthly rise.
  • On a monthly basis, retail sales fell 0.4%, dropping from last 1.3% rise in May.
  • General merchandise sales picked up 4.6% y/y, quicker than the 3.9% y/y increase last month, while sales of fabric apparels and accessories falling 1.4% y/y, narrowing from the decrease of 3.7% y/y in May.
  • Sales of food and beverages increased 6.8% y/y, after growing 6.4% y/y last month.
  • Fuel sales, another key driver, dropped 3.9% y/y, dipping further from the 1.7% y/y decrease made in May.
  • Sales of machinery and equipment decreased 3.6% y/y, after falling 5.3% y/y last month.
