Japan Dec CPI 0.5% Y/Y; Energy Up

  • Japan's national average core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) rose 0.5% from the year earlier in December, unchanged from the previous month, marking the eighth recovering month.
  • Energy rose 16.4% y/y, accelerating from the previous 15.6% y/y growth. contributing 1.12 percentage points to CPI.
  • The underlying inflation rate measured by the core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) decreased 0.7% y/y, sliding from the 0.6% decrease last month.
  • Prices for ex-perishables rose 1.1% y/y, flat from November.
  • Prices for household spending rose 2.5% y/y, quicker from the 0.4% y/y growth reported last month, and prices for accommodation surged 44.0% y/y, slower than last 57.6%.
